When I’m spending time friends we know those topics are off base otherwise it can get ugly. What I do notice is the liberal folks are less tolerant of differing views. Example, during Covid my wife and I golfed with a couple who are great people that are democrats. Covid vaccines came up and we spoke of Texas not requiring it. The couple’s wife states “I hope they all die then”, forgetting our daughter and grand kids live there. She did backtrack when she realized it…… I just don’t get the utter hatred from liberal democrats.
Media told them the covid shots prevent the spread of the disease when in fact they were never tested for transmission. Media is much to blame for the animosity
Too many times I have gone down this rabbit hole myself. A good reminder in especially charged times (in Canada at least ) that neither is worth a friendship or even family
I did the same thing, I left the Presidential part blank. I decided I’m not going to vote against candidates and if neither party privies someone I can vote FOR then I’m going to.leave it blank.
Lowell, don't feel bad. You would think a faculty member from an elite university would exercise more emotional intelligence. It's important (more than ever) for people to hear opposing viewpoints and be OK with a difference in opinion. Her acting as though she was personally offended because you elected to not vote for either presidential candidate is laughable. it's a shame her job is to impart wisdom on young adults.
I admit it is upsetting to hear that so many didn’t vote because they didn’t like either candidate. I follow politics closely because I know that’s how my bread is buttered, and I always make a choice for critical positions like POTUS. I do feel it is a civic duty and I do not ever relinquish it. That said, I respect your father’s idea about not sharing that private information. Most accomplished women aren’t fond of having personal rights stripped away, and many view the lack of support for Harris as only leading to more injustices to be delivered. I understand her reaction, as she likely had a few drinks as well and emotion got the best of her in a situation where she had only just met you. I am sorry about the way your interaction played out because I believe you are a good human being. You are also a professional, so I hope that you might appreciate another professional’s insight on her potential feelings wrapped underneath that cold reaction. Love to you and Iggy, and maybe we will both heed your wise father’s advice ❤️
I fail to see why you don’t want to talk religion or politics. Those 2 subjects are high on the list of things that affect all of us. If whoever you are talking to gets visibly upset because they can’t accept your reasoning then they are not anyone I care to be around. I discuss religion and politics frequently with my best friends of differing view points, but at the end of the day we are still friends.
That's unfortunate. I have a whole family full of big mouths who can't help but "talk" politics. My dad and my brother in law in particular. My dad is a fully indoctrinated MAGA and my brother-in-law is a cuckoo conspiracy theorist. And not one of them can hold a conversation about politics without hollering at the top of their lungs. It's insufferable. My dad is 74 and glued to Fox News every free moment of the day he has. One mention of democrats or a nay word about Trump and he launches into a long winded incomprehensible diatribe. It never used to be like this. Sigh.

She would have walked out on you too

Serena, I've thought about this a lot and I agree with everything you wrote. Thank you

Most people can't handle those discussions, unfortunately.
