Gavin Newsom just had a law passed preventing school districts from requiring teachers, principals etc. to inform parents of their child’s change in sexual orientation or gender identity. In my opinion, this act by Newsom is an outright attack on American families.
That’s what I wrote on Twitter (X) a few days ago. There’s more I couldn’t write because X entries are so brief.
Newsom and his bunch think school principals and teachers and grade advisers are more important in raising kids than parents when it comes to children experiencing gender dysphoria. In what universe? Newsom’s bill leaves parents clueless if their kid experiences issues about his/her sexual identity. Not fair. Not right.
Why? Because the bill puts the state between parents and their children. When did the state of California get so good at raising confused children? When the state get so good at anything?
After I posted my tweet, some people wrote me that some parents are dangerous. Of course, but so are school administrators and government meddlers. I’m with parents every time on this issue. If my child is having gender confusion and somehow I don’t know – I hope I would – I want to be told. I want to be able to hear my child and speak to my child and change if I need to. A six-year-old experiencing gender dysphoria could just be confused or following a fad. But the school is empowered to keep that from me. The bill talks about students’ rights to privacy. But I don’t think a six-year-old has a right to privacy from his/her parents in this matter.
In my world, the parents are the final authority on what’s good for their children and that must be the default position. My mother and father wanted to know when I was having trouble, and we would talk about it. I trusted them more than the principal of my elementary school PS 193 in Brooklyn, a principal who didn’t even know my name.
The bill has one particular clause which is a doozy:
Parents and families have an important role to play in the lives of young people.
An important role? How about THE important role, certainly not subservient to schools. What arrogance to include a clause like that, throwing parents a bone.
A few more things: For all the good things Black Lives Matter has done, for all the important issues they raised, they used to blast the nuclear family on their website. This always bothered me. They were in favor of some kind of communal upbringing – a Marxist concept. Thankfully, they have removed that attack on families from their website.
Some readers will say about me, this old guy should stick to sports. Perhaps I should. Perhaps I am shallow and misguided. But I am aware of the world around me, and Gavin Newsom, the hypocrite who wined and dined at the French Laundry during Covid, is being authoritarian on this issue.
The American family is the fundamental and most important place of learning and growing for a child. This law will surely be challenged in the courts. Newsom and his bunch should get out of the way.
Lowell - it is the erosion of the American family, starting with the LBJ era in my opinion, which has contributed significantly to the decay of our society, our morals, our ethics, our integrity. no greater injustice has been foisted on America's youth since LBJ's "Great Society" initiative of a "nanny state"which began an avalanche of change and chaos that only continues to grow like a terminal cancer to this very day. Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev said it best one day when he was asked about the potential of Russia invading the USA. His answer simply was, we don't have to invade them because they eventually will destroy themselves. And, we are more than well on our way......
Lowell, as a 49er fan and former CA native, I thank you for this perspective and take. Parents are the primary educators and caregivers for their children. Families are the fundamental building blocks of society. Intervening in that structure will ultimately lead to the downfall of society.
